To His Excellency
Gov. Washburn
Dear Sir,
In the absence of Gov. Berry (sp?) I take occassion to answer yours making inquiries relative to Berdan's Regt. of Sharp shooters.
We have in thi8s State one company nearly full - the enlistments up to today being about 100. They will rendezvous in Concord for a few days & the first of next week go to New York to be equipped and drilled.
We have had no difficulty in enlisting men for that arm of the service - paying them the same bounty other recruits receive. We have been for the past five weeks enlisting this company and now the enlistments are more ready than at first. I think we could easily fill another company of as good men and expert shooters as those comprising our first.
Any further enquiries will be readily & cheerfully answered by Gov. Berry or myself at your pleasure.
I am sir
Very respectfully
Your obdt. servant
George H. Chandler
Dep. Secretary of State
